# AI for LP reporting and investor relations

AI for LP reporting means using a model to collect portfolio company data, extract the metrics, and draft the quarterly letter and LP updates, with every figure traced to its source so the IR team and the CFO can check it. Few firms do this yet: Visible's 2026 AI Sentiment Report found 16% of VC firms use AI for LP reporting, against 57% for internal operations. The work is a good fit for AI, and the data is among the most sensitive a fund holds, so the controls matter as much as the drafting.

## Where LP reporting stands

Quarterly reporting combines two kinds of work. One is collection: chasing founders for KPIs, reading board decks and updates, and reconciling numbers across formats. The other is writing: the letter, the portfolio commentary and answers to LP questions.

Collection is where AI has moved fastest. Visible reports that its average customer extracted 10 times more metrics with AI than in the prior year, and that its AI Inbox grew from 10% to over 40% of all metrics collected, with more than half of all metrics now produced by AI rather than typed in by hand. Standard Metrics describes AI agents and managed services for portfolio data collection, with metrics "traceable to source documents."

The writing side lags. The same Visible survey found 16% of firms use AI for LP reporting and 16% to identify trends across portfolio data, while security concerns (51%) and data quality (41%) are among the top barriers. Both apply here: LP data is confidential, and a letter built on bad portfolio data is worse than a late one.

## The standards your report has to meet

AI drafts should follow the format LPs expect, so start from the standards.

- **ILPA Reporting Template (v. 2.0).** ILPA released it on January 22, 2025. It breaks out internal chargebacks to show expenses allocated or paid to GPs and related persons, and adds more granular partnership expenses aligned to general ledgers. ILPA says it replaces the 2016 template going forward for funds still in their investment period during Q1 2026, or funds that start operations on or after January 1, 2026.
- **ILPA Performance Template.** Released the same day, it standardizes performance methodology, with tables for cash flows and transaction type mapping and standardized reporting of IRRs and TVPI/MOIC.
- **The SEC's quarterly statement rule is gone.** On June 5, 2024, the Fifth Circuit vacated the SEC's private fund adviser rules in full, including the quarterly statement rule, in *National Association of Private Fund Managers v. SEC*. Your reporting duties come from your LPA, side letters and market practice such as ILPA's templates.

This is general information, not legal advice. Your fund documents set what you owe each LP.

For an AI tool, these templates are useful: they give it a fixed structure to fill, field by field, and they give your team a checklist to compare the draft against.

## How AI drafts an LP update, step by step

1. **Collect.** Pull founder updates, board decks and financials for the quarter. AI can read PDFs, spreadsheets and email replies and extract the KPIs you track.
2. **Normalize.** Map each company's metrics to your definitions. Ask the tool to flag any company whose definition changed since last quarter.
3. **Compute and check.** Fund-level figures such as TVPI, DPI and IRR should come from your fund admin or accounting system, not from the model's arithmetic. Let the AI quote them, with the source.
4. **Draft.** Ask for portfolio commentary company by company, in your house style, with a citation on every number.
5. **Review.** The CFO checks the numbers, and the partner responsible for each company checks the narrative. Anything the AI inferred, as opposed to read, should be marked.
6. **Answer follow-ups.** When an LP asks a question after the letter goes out, the same sources can feed a cited draft reply.

Citations are the control that makes this safe to use. If a figure in the letter can't be traced to a founder update, a board deck or the fund admin's report, it shouldn't be in the letter.

## What IR teams should check before AI touches LP data

LP reporting draws on data from two sides: portfolio companies' non-public results, and the LPs' own information. Check these before you connect any tool.

| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| The plan doesn't train on your data | OpenAI, for example, says personal ChatGPT plans may train on chats unless you opt out, while Business and Enterprise don't by default |
| You know the retention period and who at the provider can read content | Your LPs may ask, and you need a straight answer |
| Your LPA and side letters allow the processing | Confidentiality terms may treat sending LP information to a vendor as disclosure to a third party |
| LP identities and capital accounts are kept out unless needed | Most letter drafting needs portfolio data, not LP data |
| Fund-level numbers come from the fund admin, not the model | Arithmetic errors in TVPI or IRR reach every LP at once |
| Sending needs a person | No LP communication should leave the firm without a human approving it |
| You can describe the tool in your DDQ | ILPA's DDQ 2.0 asks you to list the tool used for reporting and investor relations, and about security reviews of data held by third parties |

ILPA's Responsible AI Quick Guide for Asset Owners (January 2024) also suggests LPs ask "What are the GP's controls around AI use at the fund level?" Your answer should cover reporting.

## Tools firms use for LP reporting

Portfolio monitoring platforms such as Visible and Standard Metrics collect and structure portfolio data and support LP reporting. General assistants such as ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude and Microsoft Copilot draft from the documents you give them. Fund administrators produce the capital account statements and fund-level figures. Our list of [AI tools for venture capital](/blog/best-ai-tools-for-venture-capital/) covers what each sees of your data. Multi-family offices and RIAs reporting to their own clients face similar questions, covered on our [wealth management](/wealth-management/) page.

## Private SuperIntelligence for investor relations

Private SuperIntelligence is the most capable AI, trusted with everything your IR team works from: founder updates, board decks, fund documents and the partners' inboxes. It drafts from your firm's own data, answers with citations a CFO can check, and acts within permissions you set, so you can require a person's approval before anything is sent. Each deployment is built for one firm, and the provider keeps no copy of the work and trains nothing on it. See [AI for venture capital firms](/venture-capital/).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can AI write LP updates?

Yes, as a first draft. AI can turn founder updates, board decks and your notes into portfolio commentary, and a person should check every figure against its source before anything goes to LPs.

### How many VC firms use AI for LP reporting?

Visible's 2026 AI Sentiment Report found 16% of VC firms use AI for LP reporting, compared with 57% for internal operations.

### What is the ILPA Reporting Template?

It's ILPA's standard format for reporting fees, expenses and carried interest to LPs. Version 2.0 was released on January 22, 2025, and ILPA says it applies going forward to funds in their investment period during Q1 2026 or launched on or after January 1, 2026.

### Is there an SEC rule requiring quarterly LP statements?

The SEC adopted one in August 2023, but the Fifth Circuit vacated it on June 5, 2024, along with the rest of the private fund adviser rules. Your LPA and side letters set your reporting obligations. This is general information, not legal advice.

### Should AI calculate TVPI and IRR for the LP letter?

Take those figures from your fund administrator or accounting system and have the AI cite them. Using the model to do fund-level arithmetic adds a risk you don't need.
