# Personal, safe and private superintelligence: three different questions

Personal superintelligence, Meta's term, is about whether an AI knows you well enough to help with your own goals. Safe superintelligence, the mission of Safe Superintelligence Inc., is about whether a superintelligent model behaves as intended. Private superintelligence is about whether you can trust AI with everything: your work, your data and the questions you'd ask no one else.

The three phrases sound alike and get mixed up in search results and news coverage. They are not rival products. Each one names a different property, and a single system could in principle have all three.

## The three terms side by side

| Term | Question it answers | Who uses it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal superintelligence | Does the AI know me and work toward my goals? | Meta | Mark Zuckerberg's letter, July 30, 2025 |
| Safe superintelligence | Does the AI behave, as it grows more capable? | Safe Superintelligence Inc. | ssi.inc |
| Private superintelligence | Can I trust the AI with everything? | Mitosis Labs | privatesuperintelligence.si |

## What is personal superintelligence?

Mark Zuckerberg set out the idea in a letter titled "Personal Superintelligence," dated July 30, 2025. He wrote that Meta's vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone: an AI that helps you achieve your goals, create what you want to see in the world, and grow into the person you aspire to be.

The letter contrasts this with a different view in the industry, that superintelligence should be directed centrally toward automating all valuable work. Meta's position is to put the power in people's hands, to direct toward what they value. Zuckerberg argues the most useful version will be one that "knows us deeply, understands our goals," and he expects personal devices such as glasses, which can see what we see and hear what we hear, to become our primary computing devices.

On risk, the letter says superintelligence will raise novel safety concerns, and that Meta will need to be rigorous about mitigating them and careful about what it chooses to open source.

So personal superintelligence is a statement about purpose and closeness: AI aimed at the individual, with deep context about that individual. The letter's subject is what the AI is for. Who holds what it learns about you is a separate question.

## What is safe superintelligence?

Safe Superintelligence Inc. describes itself on its own site as "the world's first straight-shot SSI lab," with "one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence." The company says it approaches safety and capabilities in tandem, as technical problems to be solved through engineering and scientific breakthroughs, and that it plans to advance capabilities as fast as possible while making sure safety stays ahead. It is an American company with offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

Safe superintelligence answers a question about the model's behavior: as a system becomes more capable than people, will it still do what it should? That question applies to everyone at once, whoever is using the system.

## What is private superintelligence?

Private superintelligence is superintelligent AI you can trust with everything: your work, your data and the questions you'd ask no one else. It knows your whole world, keeps it yours, and puts the full reach of the most capable AI behind you. The provider keeps no copy of the work, trains nothing on it and cannot see the outputs.

The term comes from Prakshal Jain (PJ) and Alexander Morris, the co-founders of Mitosis Labs, who developed the idea together. Alex Morris put it this way on the AGTP podcast: "Superintelligence is the next rung in the ladder, and private superintelligence is the end game of all of it."

The reasoning is practical. A model can only help with what it can reach, and people hold back what matters most when it lands on someone else's servers. Privacy gives you the freedom to ask anything without being watched. Trust is what lets you bring an AI the deal room, the family's trust documents or the board pack, and get the full value back. ## How the three fit together

The terms answer independent questions, so you can ask all three of any AI system:

- **Personal:** does it know my world well enough to be useful to me in particular?
- **Safe:** does the underlying model behave as intended?
- **Private:** who else can see what I give it, and what it gives back?

An assistant can be personal without being private, if everything it learns about you sits on its maker's servers. A model can be safe in the alignment sense and still keep your prompts in a log for 30 days. Private superintelligence adds the condition the other two leave open. For a family office, a fund or anyone with confidential matters, that condition decides how much of their world they will hand over, and so how useful the AI can become.

## Questions to ask any "superintelligence" product

| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What does it know about me, and where is that stored? | Personal context is only as private as the place it lives |
| Does the provider keep a copy of my prompts or outputs? | Retention is where most privacy gaps sit |
| Is my data used to train models? | Training can't be undone once it has happened |
| Can the provider's staff see my outputs? | Outputs often contain more than the prompt did |
| Where does it run, and who controls the hardware? | Deployment decides which company's terms apply |

## Private SuperIntelligence

Private SuperIntelligence is the service Mitosis Labs built on this idea: the most capable AI, trusted with everything. It is an AI concierge for enterprises, family offices and private clients that works across your own email, documents and data, answers with citations, and acts within permissions you set. It was founded by Prakshal Jain (PJ), Co-founder and CTO, Private SuperIntelligence (by Mitosis Labs), and Alexander Morris, Co-founder and CEO, Private SuperIntelligence (by Mitosis Labs). ## Frequently asked questions

### What does personal superintelligence mean?

Personal superintelligence is Meta's term, from Mark Zuckerberg's July 30, 2025 letter, for superintelligent AI that knows you deeply and helps you pursue your own goals. Meta expects devices such as glasses to be the main way people use it.

### Is personal superintelligence the same as private superintelligence?

No. Personal superintelligence is about AI knowing you well; private superintelligence is about whether you can trust AI with everything, with the provider keeping no copy of the work, training nothing on it and unable to see the outputs.

### What is Safe Superintelligence Inc.?

It is an AI lab whose stated goal and only product is a safe superintelligence. It says it develops safety and capabilities in tandem, and it has offices in Palo Alto and Tel Aviv.

### Who coined the term private superintelligence?

Prakshal Jain (PJ) and Alexander Morris, the co-founders of Mitosis Labs, developed the idea together. Mitosis Labs uses it for its service, Private SuperIntelligence.

### Can an AI be personal, safe and private at once?

Yes. The three terms describe separate properties, so nothing stops one system from having all of them. Ask each question of any product you consider.
